It was in 1893 that Kokichi Mikimoto created the world's first cultured pearls, a first step that would help make pearls more accessible. Maison Mikimoto also uses conch pearls, produced by the queen conch (found in the Caribbean), which are oval pink pearls with a wavy flame structure on the surface. As for South Sea cultured pearls, there are three varieties: golden pearls with a champagne hue, produced by gold-lipped oysters; white pearls, produced by silver-lipped oysters (round, around 10 mm); and black pearls, from French Polynesia, ranging from black to green, blue, brown, yellow, red, or peacock, a magnificent (but rare) iridescent color.
