The History of Maison Chopard

The story of Maison Chopard begins in 1860, when Louis-Ulysse Chopard, then aged 24, founded a watchmaking manufacture in Sonvilier in the Swiss Jura. From its inception, the manufacture specialised in flat precision pocket watches and chronometers. The manufacture soon gained a reputation as a symbol of Swiss excellence and quality: at the end of the 19th century, Chopard became the official supplier to the Swiss railway company, and Tsar Nicholas II became a regular customer. Through word of mouth, the Chopard brand was already being exported to Russia, Poland, the Baltic States, and Scandinavia.

In 1937, Paul-Louis Chopard, the founder’s son, took over the manufacture and relocated it to Geneva (the capital of high-end watchmaking). 6 years later, his son Paul-André Chopard took over the Maison until 1963. None of the Chopard sons wished to continue the family manufacture: the company was therefore sold to goldsmith and watchmaker Karl Scheufele III, who, with his wife Karin, helped accelerate the company’s growth worldwide.

In the following years, many changes would alter the course of the Maison’s history, notably the addition of a women’s collection. In 1976, the Happy Diamonds watch was born: with its moving diamonds between the dial and the watch crystal, this patented watch was a true revolution in the world of diamond-set watches.

In 1983, Chopard opened its first boutique in Hong Kong. 3 years later, a boutique opened in Geneva. The brand then diversified through partnerships, such as with the Mille Miglia car race, giving rise to a collection of watches with sporty lines; and with the Cannes Film Festival, which gave it the glamorous luxury brand image we know today, leading to the Red Carpet collection in 2007.

In 1997, the first watch created by Chopard, the L.U.C 96.01-L, was voted Watch of the Year in Switzerland. That year marked a turning point for the brand, which built a Manufacture entirely dedicated to creating authentic hand-decorated watches in Fleurier, in the Swiss Jura.

The Chopard Style

Maison Chopard has diversified over time. Initially specialising in precision men’s watches, it evolved into a luxury brand with collections for all tastes: classic watches (L.U.C collection); sporty watches (Classic Racing collection); unique and luxurious watches (Happy Diamonds collection); and women’s watches (Impériale and La Strada collections).

What stands out about Chopard is the quality of its creations, the elegance of its watch lines, and the virtuosity of the artisans who design the watches: perpetual calendar, GMT, chronograph, tourbillon… All techniques are mastered and integrated into the Maison’s creations.

Chopard’s Iconic Creations

Chopard’s most iconic creation is undoubtedly its Happy Diamonds watch, available in men’s and women’s versions. Created in 1976, this avant-garde model for its time marked a turning point in the world of diamond-set watches, so much so that it was patented by Maison Chopard.

But it is not the only model that left its mark. For example, the sporty steel St. Moritz watch, the first creation of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele in 1980 (he was then 22 years old), very avant-garde for its time, was one of the first water-resistant and shock-resistant watches. In the same vein, the Happy Sport collection followed in 1993, achieving unprecedented success.

Like the St. Moritz watch, other Chopard watches have amazed with their uniqueness and become iconic models of the brand, such as the Luna D’Oro model with its retrograde display and perpetual calendar; the Happy Clown watch by Caroline Scheufele, the brand’s first design watch; or the geometric and design-forward Ice Cube watch, one of the Maison’s most modern creations.
