The History of Maison Buccellati

Maison Buccellati was founded in 1919 when Mario Buccellati, the son of a family of goldsmiths then aged 28, opened his first boutique in Milan, at Largo Santa Margherita.

The style of his creations was then sophisticated, with opulent and richly worked jewelry, in contrast to the Art Deco jewelry that abounded during the same period. The jewelry was handmade, using techniques such as rigato, which gives the jewelry a satin effect, as well as engraving and openwork, which would remain hallmarks of the Maison.

Orders were not long in coming, notably the sautoir necklace decorated with rubies and yellow beryl, commissioned by Gabriele d’Annunzio in 1923. In 1951, after opening boutiques in Florence and Rome, Mario Buccellati opened his first boutique in New York, followed 3 years later by a second boutique on Fifth Avenue.

In 1967, upon the death of Mario Buccellati, 4 of his 5 sons took over the Maison, including Gianmaria, with his highly recognizable style. It was Gianmaria Buccellati who founded, in 1973, the Italian Gemological Institute (IGI), of which he would be director for 25 years. In 1978, his son Andrea, aged 20, was appointed artistic director of the Maison.

At the end of the 19th century, other Buccellati boutiques opened around the world, including one in Paris on the famous Place Vendôme, one in Monaco, one in Tokyo, and one in Hong Kong.

At the turn of the 2000s, the brand began to diversify, without industrializing the design of its jewelry, which remained handmade. The first collection of Buccellati watches was launched in 2001; in 2004, the Maison presented its animal-themed collection of 28 brooches in the shape of baroque style animals; and in 2007, the Maison unveiled its first collection of cocktail rings.

The fourth generation of Maison Buccellati is now represented by Andrea’s daughter, Lucrezia Buccellati, who has been designing jewelry since she was 10 years old and dreams of reinventing the Buccellati style. She notably launched the Romanza line of engagement rings, characterized by its chiseled gold and ornaments, as well as a line of jewelry inspired by paintings of great masters, on the occasion of the inauguration of the immense and luxurious boutique on Madison Avenue in New York.

The Buccellati Style

From its beginnings, Maison Buccellati distinguished itself with its opulent and extravagant jewelry, richly worked with ornaments and advanced techniques such as openwork and engraving. When Mario Buccellati opened his first boutique in 1919, the Art Deco style prevailed in Europe, but it was the baroque style that made the Maison successful.

The creations of Maison Buccellati are inspired by nature, an inexhaustible source of inspiration, but also by art. The jewelry itself is crafted by hand like works of art: gold becomes lace, and diamonds and precious stones catch the light to give the jewelry a different appearance each time it is worn.

Iconic Creations of Maison Buccellati

Among the iconic jewelry of Maison Buccellati is the “Sautoir” necklace created by Mario Buccellati for Gabriele Annunzio in 1923. This was the first piece by the Maison to have such resonance in Italy as well as in Europe and internationally, propelling the brand among the greatest only 4 years after its creation!

Which collection best represents the art of lace so characteristic of Maison Buccellati? Certainly the Trina ring collection (“trina” actually means “lace” in Italian), which includes 8 ring models crafted with the engraved and openwork metal technique. Another technique dear to Maison Buccellati, “rigato,” is notably found in its first watch collection, the Macri collection. This technique is usually a goldsmithing technique: Maison Buccellati breaks the codes by using it for jewelry. Combined with the “Ornato” engraving technique (ornaments on gold), unique watches are obtained that represent the artisanal excellence of the Italian Maison!
