Expert Diamond Appraisal

The VVS designation, which you may see on your diamond authenticity certificates, refers to the diamond’s clarity grade. What does this acronym mean? What is the difference between VVS1 and VVS2? Why choose a VVS diamond? Here is our guide to VVS clarity diamonds.

VVS Clarity Diamond: What Is It?

The acronym VVS stands for “Very, Very Slightly Included”. This clarity grade is assigned to diamonds that contain very small inclusions, invisible to the naked eye and nearly invisible even under 10x magnification. While a VVS clarity diamond may contain a few inclusions, they in no way diminish its brilliance.

GIA Diamond Clarity Chart

VVS1 or VVS2: What Is the Difference?

The VVS clarity grade has two sub-grades: VVS1 and VVS2. VVS1 clarity diamonds have fewer inclusions than VVS2 clarity diamonds, or less visible inclusions. Generally, VVS1 clarity diamonds have one or two imperfections, while VVS2 clarity diamonds may contain more.

On the diamond clarity scale, diamonds are ranked in this order (from least pure to most pure):

  • I3-I2 (Included 3-2)
  • I1 (Included 1)
  • SI (Slightly included)
  • VS (Very slightly included)
  • VVS2
  • VVS1
  • IF (Internally Flawless)
  • FL (Flawless)

However, most of the time, the difference between VVS1 and VVS2 clarity diamonds is very minimal and invisible to the naked eye.

The second major difference between VVS1 and VVS2 clarity diamonds is the price: two diamonds of the same size, color, and weight (carats), if they have a different clarity sub-grade, will have a 25% difference in diamond price!

Why Choose a VVS Diamond?

VVS clarity diamonds rank lower on the clarity scale than internally flawless (IF) diamonds, whose inclusions are not visible under 10x magnification, and which are therefore rarer. They are thus sold for less than IF clarity diamonds. Yet, the difference is minimal, even nonexistent when viewing diamonds with the naked eye—which is often the only way you will observe them! This is why 21% of customers choose VVS diamonds.

Moreover, for these reasons, demand for VVS clarity diamonds is steadily increasing. If you opt for a diamond of this type, its value will therefore rise over time, which may prove useful if you decide to resell it one day.

What is a VVS clarity diamond?

VVS clarity diamonds (Very, Very Slightly Included) contain very small inclusions, invisible to the naked eye and nearly invisible even with 10x magnification. These inclusions do not affect the diamond’s brilliance.

What is the difference between VVS1 and VVS2?

VVS1 and VVS2 are two sub-grades of VVS clarity. VVS1 diamonds have fewer or less visible inclusions than VVS2 diamonds. Typically, VVS1 diamonds have one or two imperfections, while VVS2 diamonds may have more.

Why choose a VVS diamond?

VVS diamonds are less expensive than IF (Internally Flawless) clarity diamonds while offering a nearly identical appearance to the naked eye. They represent a good compromise between quality and price, and their value can increase over time.
