Sell a Van Cleef Arpels Jewel

The Maison Van Cleef & Arpels is renowned for the quality of its craftsmanship, including the patented Mystery Setting technique, and the selection of exceptional gemstones for its jewelry and parures. Discover the history of this jewelry Maison, a symbol of French excellence. The story of Van Cleef & Arpels begins with the love story of Estelle Arpels (daughter of a precious stone dealer) and Alfred Van Cleef (son of a diamond dealer). In 1895, they married and soon founded the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906, they settled at 22 Place…

The History of Maison Van Cleef & Arpels

In the 1920s, Maison Van Cleef & Arpels did not hesitate to innovate by offering jewelry inspired by the Orient (the "Dragon Necessaire", the Egyptian bracelet...). The Maison subsequently participated in several exhibitions and won several prizes, such as the 1st prize at the Colonial International Exhibition in the Bois de Vincennes with its Chapeau Chinois parure.

In 1933, Maison Van Cleef & Arpels filed a patent for a new technique: the Mystery Set, of which the peony clip (adorned with 700 rubies totaling 71 carats, 43 baguette diamonds and 196 round diamonds) is the most famous example. Other iconic creations would follow, such as the Cadenas watch, the Zip necklace, the Passe-Partout necklace...

Maison Van Cleef & Arpels has been chosen for many special orders: Marlene Dietrich's garter bracelet, Empress Farah Pahlavi's parure, Maharani Baroda's parure, Princess Grace of Monaco's engagement parure, and the Walska Briolette brooch for the singer Ganna Walska, depicting a bird carrying a 96-carat yellow diamond in its beak...

In 1973, Maison Van Cleef & Arpels was the first French jewelry house to establish itself in Japan. In the 2000s, the launch of several High Jewelry collections (Couture, Pierres de Caractère, Trésors Révélés, Une Journée à Paris, L'Atlantide, Les Jardins...) strengthened the Maison's success in France and internationally.

The Mystery Set Technique, Emblematic of Van Cleef & Arpels

The Mystery Set technique was created by Maison Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933 and has since remained one of the Maison's iconic savoir-faire. This technique allows stones to be set without revealing any metal claws, by inserting each faceted stone into a very fine gold mesh (less than 0.2 mm!). This technique requires a particular expertise that only a few rare master jewelers (called the "Mains d'Or") possess. Creating a clip using this technique would, for example, require 300 hours of work!

Maison Van Cleef & Arpels uses this technique to set rubies, emeralds or sapphires, and produces only a few pieces with the Mystery Set each year.

This technique has several variations, also patented by Maison Van Cleef & Arpels: the Navette Mystery Set (which plays on the volume of the stones), the Vitrail Mystery Set (which plays on the transparency of the stones).

Among the most famous pieces created with this technique are the Peony Clip (1937), the Mysterious Parrot clip and the Mysterious Montgolfière Ring from the Les Voyages Extraordinaires collection (2010), and the Mysterious Seashell Ring from the Seven Seas collection (2015).

Unique Pieces That Tell Stories

Since the early 2000s, the High Jewelry collections of Maison Van Cleef & Arpels have continued what the Maison's creators and their successors began in the 20th century: telling stories with jewelry and unique creations. Storytelling has always been part of the Maison's DNA, starting with the love story of Estelle and Alfred.

Maison Van Cleef & Arpels has thus created many bespoke pieces over the years, including the Serti Amoureux, which offers a single-set diamond selected for its qualities (purity, color, cut) to couples celebrating their union.

Each piece has a story, like the Ballerina and Fairy clips from the 1940s, created by Louis Arpels as a tribute to his passion for dance (a tribute that would continue with the Ballet Jewels in 1967 and the Ballet Précieux High Jewelry collection in 2007), or the animal clips from "La Boutique" inspired by the cartoon style.
