Estimating the price of a diamond is complex, as it depends on many factors: the diamond’s characteristics, its value and quality criteria, diamond market dynamics, and the diamond price at the time of estimation… That is why we recommend having the diamond’s value assessed by a professional laboratory (GIA, IGI, HRD…) before selling it. Here is a short guide to help you understand the various factors that determine the price of a diamond.

The selling price of a diamond at a diamond dealer or jeweler is different from the diamond price. Indeed, the selling price also includes the margin on the jewelry or on the diamond. To speak of the diamond price, one generally uses the price per carat.
Purchase a cut diamond
The carat is the unit used to measure the weight of a diamond. 1 carat equals 0.2 grams: a 5-carat diamond therefore weighs 1 gram, and a 10-carat diamond weighs 2 grams. For the same diamond quality, it is estimated that the higher the diamond’s weight, the more the price per carat increases. Thus, a 2-carat diamond will cost more than double a 1-carat diamond of the same characteristics.
How is the price of a diamond calculated?
The diamond price is primarily calculated based on its quality. Quality is assessed according to the diamond’s characteristics, i.e., notably the famous 4Cs:
Cut
Carat (weight)
Color
Clarity
To know these various diamond characteristics, it is advisable to obtain a certificate from a gemological laboratory. This certificate will allow you to assess the diamond’s value more precisely, without making any mistakes (some characteristics, especially color and clarity, are subjective and require an expert eye).
Factors causing diamond price variation
Let us review the various factors that influence the diamond price.Diamond cut
The diamond cut is part of the 4Cs. The cut includes on the one hand the diamond’s shape, and on the other hand, the quality of its cut.
The shape of the diamond cut is the easiest to estimate with the naked eye, even if you are not an expert. The following shapes can be distinguished notably: round brilliant, princess, oval, cushion, radiant, pear, marquise, heart, emerald, triangle, or Asscher. For example, the round brilliant cut, one of the most expensive and best-selling, is distinguished by 57 facets in total, including the table.
As for the quality of the diamond cut, it is more difficult to estimate. Four parts can be distinguished on a diamond: the table, the crown, the girdle, and the pavilion. The better these different parts are proportioned relative to the diameter and height of the diamond, the better the diamond cut quality. The quality of the diamond cut determines how light will reflect off the diamond.
Diamond weight in carats
Diamond weight is expressed in carats, with 1 carat = 0.2 grams.
To estimate diamond weight, a precise carat scale is used, accurate to a minimum of one tenth of a carat. The larger the diamond, and therefore the higher the carat number, the greater its value (and hence its price).
As we pointed out above, the diamond price will not be proportional to its weight: the larger the diamond, the higher the price per carat.
Diamond color
To assess the color of a diamond, a scale is used ranging from the letter D (the most valuable color) to the letter Z (the least valuable color). The further one advances in the alphabet, the more the diamond will have a yellow tint. Diamonds of color D are thus colorless.
To be precise, the assessment of a diamond’s color should preferably be done in a laboratory, by an expert, who will compare with the naked eye the diamond to be analyzed against comparison diamonds of calibrated color. This method is subjective, which is why it is preferable to have your diamond analyzed by a gemological laboratory recognized by diamond dealers, such as GIA, IGI, or HRD.
Diamond color plays an important role in assessing its value and price, as a single degree on the diamond color scale can change the price by up to 20%!
Diamond clarity
The diamond clarity grade is determined by observation under a 10x magnification loupe: the objective is to observe the inclusions present in the diamond. The more inclusions a diamond has, the lower its value (and therefore its price).
Thus, diamonds presenting no inclusion (Flawless or FL on the grading scale) are the purest, while diamonds whose inclusions are visible to the naked eye (P1 to P3) are those considered the least pure.
After FL, the scale features the grades IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included), VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included), SI1 to SI3 (Slightly Included), and P1 to P3 (Included).
The difference from one clarity grade to another is often difficult to discern with the naked eye, yet the price differences can be significant. For equivalent quality, two diamonds of two successive grades may show a price difference of 10 to 20%!

The diamond price strongly depends on demand: if customers want a diamond without fluorescence, then fluorescent diamonds will be cheaper. Demand constantly shifts diamond market prices. To stay informed, you can consult the “Diamond Price List” report, which regularly updates reference diamond prices according to the 4Cs.

Fancy color diamonds, synthetic diamonds… price differences
The prices of colorless natural diamonds are not the same as the prices of colored or synthetic diamonds. For example, for a fancy color diamond, the price will largely depend on the intensity of the diamond’s color, but also on the type of color (intense red or pink, for instance, is more valuable than straw yellow).
As for synthetic diamonds (a type of diamond created in a laboratory), their price will largely depend on the technique used to produce them (CVD or HPHT method, the former having more value than the latter). Generally speaking, a synthetic diamond will be 20 to 50% cheaper than a natural diamond, simply because it is not rare and can be reproduced identically ad infinitum!
Estimating the price of your diamond to sell it
If you wish to estimate the price of your diamond, the first thing to do is to have it certified by one of the globally recognized gemological laboratories (GIA, LFG, HRD).
Certification of your diamond will cost you a few hundred euros, but it will allow you to know the strengths of your diamond in order to better estimate its price. You will then have all the cards in hand to resell it to a professional (diamond dealer or jeweler) or to a private individual at the fairest price!

Frequently Asked Questions
Your questions
What does the price of a diamond depend on?+
The price of a diamond is based on the 4Cs — carat weight, color, clarity, and cut quality — as well as its grading report (GIA, IGI, HRD) and market conditions. Two diamonds of the same weight can therefore have very different values.
What is the diamond price list (Rapaport)?+
The Rapaport is the international benchmark for diamond prices, updated regularly. It serves as a basis for professionals to provide an estimate and a fair purchase offer.
Why does the price per carat increase with weight?+
Because large stones are rare. For equal quality, the price per carat rises in steps: a 2-carat diamond is thus worth more than two 1-carat diamonds.
How can I find out the exact value of my diamond?+
By having it appraised by state-certified gemologists. At Diamantaires Paris, the appraisal is free, with no obligation, and results in a purchase offer with immediate payment.
