The history of Maison Boucheron

The first boutique of Maison Boucheron was located at the Palais-Royal, under the arcades of the Galerie Valois. Soon, Frédéric Boucheron aspired to a more strategic location to attract high society: in 1893, he decided to settle on Place Vendôme. He chose 26 Vendôme for its proximity to the Opéra Garnier district and the Tuileries Garden. He then took the opportunity to enlarge and embellish his boutique, with gold and green marble decor to give it an even more majestic appearance. Today, the building at 26 Vendôme has become a Historic Monument and still houses the boutique and workshops of the Maison.

It was also in 1893 that Frédéric Boucheron opened his first boutique abroad, in Moscow.
Frequented by celebrities, his boutiques were so successful that Maison Boucheron was awarded a gold medal at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition. Other medals and prizes followed, and the Maison was present at Universal Exhibitions in France and abroad for more than 30 years!

Maison Boucheron soon expanded abroad, opening a boutique in London and an office in New York in 1903. In 1928, the Maharajah of Patiala in India commissioned a huge parure from the Maison, consisting of 149 pieces chosen from his own precious stones! Today, the Boucheron family is the Official Guardian of the Treasure of Iran in Tehran and has 53 boutiques worldwide!

Until 1994, Maison Boucheron was a family business. The jewelry business was passed down from father to son until the Maison was bought by the Schweizerhall company. Then, in 2000, Maison Boucheron was bought by Gucci. Today, it belongs to the Kering group, which owns Gucci, as well as Saint-Laurent, Balenciaga, and other French luxury houses.

Indeed, at that time, being a courtesan could make one wealthy: women of ill repute would buy sumptuous jewelry with the money thus earned.
