History of Maison H.Stern

The story of Maison H.Stern began in 1945 with the founding of H.Stern Jewelers by Hans Stern, a German whose family had migrated to Brazil shortly after the Night of the Long Knives. Then a typist in a company exporting semi-precious stones from Minas Gerais for industrial use, he became passionate about fine stones and decided to change his life to make it his profession. At age 23, he sold his accordion for 200 dollars, which he invested as capital in his new company.

Faced with the success of his small stone business in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Hans Stern decided to expand his company’s activities and venture into stone cutting and jewelry manufacturing. The first boutique opened in 1949 near the Rio de Janeiro docks, frequented by wealthy clientele from cruise ships, such as Fidel Castro and Rita Hayworth.

Hans Stern had a business acumen: through guided tours of his workshops organized as early as 1952, he introduced his clients to the H.Stern jewelry manufacturing process. This tradition continues today, attracting 10,000 visitors per year, many of whom conclude the visit with a purchase at the boutique. In 1958, the company also established a gemology laboratory: it was the first jeweler to have its own laboratory on the American continent.

Dubbed the “King of Colored Stones” by Time magazine in 1964, Hans Stern saw his brand take off. He notably collaborated with the fashion world, such as the XXL Love Knot jewelry line created in collaboration with Diane von Furstenberg. Today, H.Stern jewelry is sold in 19 countries worldwide, through 160 boutiques and 170 points of sale.

The distinctive style of H.Stern jewelry

H.Stern's style is distinctly marked by the desire to highlight colored stones, these stones formerly called “semi-precious” like tourmaline, aquamarine, amethyst, or topaz. H.Stern jewelry is timeless, with airy and organic lines or asymmetrical and avant-garde lines, as long as the colored stone is showcased. Among the main inspirations of H.Stern are nature in the broad sense, but also more particularly Brazil and its environment: the Ancient America collection, for example, pays homage to pre-Columbian civilization.

H.Stern jewelry is handcrafted. It is the result of sophisticated technique but also a genuine passion for the material and the essence of the brand. The creative team includes nearly 600 professionals: jewelers, goldsmiths, cutters, setters… Nearly 10% have worked for the brand for over 20 years!
