2-CARAT DIAMOND GUIDE

How do you estimate the value of a 2-carat diamond?

To estimate the value of a 2-carat diamond, the following criteria should be considered:

  • Diamond type
  • The diamond's certificate of analysis and the laboratory that issued it
  • Diamond characteristics and quality

With regard to the type of diamond, there are a few rules to know in order not to make a mistake when estimating the value of a diamond:

  • The round brilliant diamond is the most valuable. It will therefore cost more than a pear-cut, cushion-cut or princess-cut diamond with the same characteristics;
  • A set diamond is less valuable than an investment diamond (a diamond that will not be mounted on a piece of jewelry);
  • An old diamond is more valuable than a recently acquired one.

The second important criterion for estimating the value of a 2-carat diamond is the certificate of analysis associated with the diamond. While many gemmological laboratories worldwide can issue certificates of analysis for diamonds, only a few are recognized as reliable. A diamond certified by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will be the most valuable. Diamonds certified by the LFG (Laboratoire Français de Gemmologie), IGI (International Gemological Institute) or HRD will also be valued; while diamonds certified by the AIG (Antwerp International Gemological Laboratories), which has a very poor reputation, will be valued at 0.

Finally, the diamond's characteristics come into play when estimating its value, in particular the 4Cs:

  • Diamond weight (Carat)
  • Diamond cutting (Cut)
  • The color of diamonds (Color)
  • Diamond purity (Clarity)

In other words, a 2-carat colorless, well-cut diamond with no inclusions will be worth more than a more tinted diamond with less-than-ideal proportions and a few inclusions.

Fluorescence, symmetry and polish are other diamond characteristics that appear on the assay certificate and are therefore taken into account when estimating its value.

How much does a 2-carat diamond cost?

2-carat diamond ring

For good value, a mid-range 2-carat diamond should cost between €18,000 and €21,000. Of course, this price range may vary according to the diamond's characteristics and the laboratory that certified it.

At Diamantaires Paris OG, we offer high-end 2-carat diamonds from €22,983 to €56,970. All our 2-carat diamonds are certified by GIAThese are round brilliant diamonds with no fluorescence and excellent symmetry, polish and cut quality. We offer 2-carat diamonds with no internal inclusions (IF), or, for smaller budgets, 2-carat diamonds graded SI2 (Slightly Included 2), whose inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.

Indicative price for a 2-carat diamond with GIA certificate

Each diamond is unique and different, and this price list will never replace an expert appraisal by a French state-certified gemmologist.
In addition, this price list applies to diamonds with a GIA certificate.
The margin of error as a function of period is greater than 30% in both upward and downward directions.
