Maison Boucheron’s first boutique was located at the Palais-Royal, beneath the arcades of the Galerie de Valois. Frédéric Boucheron soon aspired to a more strategic location to appeal to high society: in 1893, he decided to establish himself on Place Vendôme. He chose 26 Place Vendôme for its proximity to the Opéra Garnier district and the Tuileries Garden. He took this opportunity to expand and embellish his boutique with gold and green marble decorations to give it an even more majestic appearance. Today, the building at 26 Place Vendôme has become a designated Historical Monument and still houses the Maison’s boutique and workshops.
It was also in 1893 that Frédéric Boucheron opened his first boutique abroad, in Moscow.
Frequented by celebrities, his boutiques enjoyed great success, to the extent that Maison Boucheron was awarded a gold medal at the 1867 Paris Universal Exposition. Other medals and distinctions would follow, and the Maison was present at Universal Expositions in France and internationally for over 30 years!
Maison Boucheron quickly expanded internationally, opening a boutique in London and an office in New York in 1903. In 1928, the Maharaja of Patiala in India commissioned a monumental parure from the Maison, composed of 149 pieces crafted from his own gemstones! Today, the Boucheron family serves as the Official Curator of the Iranian Crown Jewels in Tehran and boasts 53 boutiques worldwide!
Until 1994, Maison Boucheron remained a family-owned business. The high jewelry house was passed down from father to son until its acquisition by the Swiss company Schweizerhall. Then, in 2000, Maison Boucheron was acquired by Gucci. Today, it is part of the Kering Group, which owns Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and other prestigious French luxury houses.
Maison Boucheron’s Renowned Clientele
Particularly favored by celebrities and royalty around the world, Maison Boucheron has provided jewelry to the world’s elite since the 20th century. Several actresses, such as Ava Gardner, Joan Crawford, and Sarah Bernhardt, proudly wore Boucheron jewelry. While Sarah Bernhardt commissioned Boucheron to create jewelry depicting her beloved pets, Edith Piaf considered her Boucheron “Reflet” watch, acquired in 1948, her lucky charm. She would even gift one to her lovers when the time came to part ways!
Among the royal patrons of Maison Boucheron was Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, who commissioned a gold piece of jewelry for his wife that was as supple as a silk scarf. The Maharaja of Patiala brought six trunks of precious stones containing thousands of diamonds, rubies, and emeralds to Maison Boucheron to be transformed into exquisite parures: this was the largest commission in the Maison’s history, realized through 149 individual designs! Maison Boucheron also created a diadem for Queen Elizabeth II of England; a gold wristwatch set with sapphires and rubies for King Leopold II of Belgium (a unique piece at a time when men wore only pocket watches); and a tiara for Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, which he presented to her on the occasion of their engagement.
At the turn of the 20th century, Maison Boucheron was also highly favored by courtesans, such as Esther Lachmann, known as “La Païva,” and the Countess of Castiglione, who resided for a time in the basement of the Boucheron boutique at 26 Place Vendôme. In those days, being a courtesan could bring immense wealth, allowing these women to purchase magnificent jewelry with their fortunes.
Maison Boucheron: Innovation at the Heart of Creation
Since its founding, Maison Boucheron has consistently distinguished itself through the originality of its creations: the Feuillage necklace crafted with diamonds and Kashmir sapphires, and later, the Feuillage necklace made with emeralds; the serpent necklace; the Question Mark necklace, the first asymmetrical and clasp-free necklace… From father to son, this tradition of innovation has endured to this day.
Among the innovative techniques developed by Maison Boucheron are mirror setting, mosaic setting, and the invisible clasp (patented in 1947). The mirror setting was designed to maximize light reflection across the largest possible surface, significantly enhancing the brilliance of diamonds. The mosaic setting lends flexibility and fluidity to jewelry, with gemstones set on a supple gold mesh. As for the invisible clasp, it revolutionized watch bracelets: free of buckles and prongs, it is discreet and remarkably easy to use, attaching directly to the case.
Recurring motifs in Boucheron jewelry include animals (notably the serpent, the Maison’s emblematic creature embodying the spirit of freedom) and the Art Deco style.
During Maison Boucheron’s early era, Art Nouveau reigned supreme. Developed in reaction to the Industrial Revolution, Art Nouveau was characterized by flowing curves, scrolls, arabesques, and asymmetrical movements, with motifs inspired by nature and flora. When Louis Boucheron took over after his father’s passing, Art Deco emerged. In complete contrast to Art Nouveau, it is defined by geometric lines. Boucheron jewelry from the 1920s exemplifies this Art Deco aesthetic; these pieces remain highly coveted by collectors today and command premium prices.
Mastery of Craftsmanship and Materials
Maison Boucheron’s creations are distinguished above all by their exceptional craftsmanship: pleated, faceted, satin-finished, polished… The Maison is dedicated to selecting only the finest quality gemstones. Furthermore, Boucheron draws inspiration from Haute Couture, creating jewelry that echoes the delicate lace and fabrics of high fashion.
Maison Boucheron is especially renowned for its mastery of gold, which its goldsmiths sculpt and elevate like no other. Nicknamed the “sculptor of gold” in his time, Frédéric Boucheron continuously reinvented French gold jewelry with avant-garde collections. The Quatre collection, created in 2004, has become one of Boucheron’s iconic signatures, featuring combinations of yellow gold, white gold, and pink gold accented with brown PVD.

Recognizing an Authentic Boucheron Jewelry Piece
Prior to any appraisal, our gemologists inspect the official hallmarks of the Maison. An authentic Boucheron jewel features:
- the Boucheron hallmark, discreetly yet clearly engraved on every piece;
- the metal standard hallmark: 750 for 18k gold, 950 for platinum;
- an individual serial number: each creation bears a unique number;
- the "Boucheron Paris" signature, in crisp lettering.
Manufacturing quality is another decisive indicator: flawless finishes, impeccably set stones, a distinct feel of density in hand, and highly precise clasps and mechanisms. Counterfeits often reveal finishing flaws and lower-grade metals.
