To estimate the value of a 3-carat diamond, several criteria are used:
Round brilliant diamonds are more valuable than fancy-cut diamonds such as pear, cushion and princess diamonds. Similarly, set diamonds are more valuable than investment diamonds, which are diamonds that are not mounted on a piece of jewelry.
The older the diamond (with the same characteristics), the more valuable it will be.
Above 1 carat, a certificate of analysis is highly recommended. This certificate can be issued by various analysis laboratories around the world: GIA, HRD, IGI or LFG. GIA-certified diamonds are the most valuable. Beware, however, that some laboratories have a bad reputation and a certificate from them will be worthless (e.g. AIG).
To determine a diamond's characteristics, we use the 4Cs (weight or carat, cut, color and clarity). For example, a 3-carat colorless diamond (grade D) with no visible inclusions (IF, VVS1 or VVS2) is worth considerably more than a 3-carat diamond with a more tinted color (grade H to K) and inclusions visible to the naked eye (SI1 or SI2): the former costs between 117,000 and 166,000 $ and the latter between 24,000 $ and 43,000 $. Fluorescence, symmetry and polish are other characteristics that are indicated on the diamond certificate and have an impact on the diamond's final price.
The price of a 3-carat diamond varies from 24,000 $ (approx. €20,000) to 166,000 $ (approx. €143,000) or even more, depending on the laboratory that certified the diamond, the type of diamond and its intrinsic characteristics. A 3-carat diamond with H color and VS2 clarity offers good value for money: inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and the diamond does not look tinted. The price of such a diamond is around 50,000 $ (€43,000).
