How to estimate the value of a 5-carat diamond?
A 5-carat diamond inherently holds great value. However, prices vary enormously from one diamond to another: the price of a 5-carat diamond can be multiplied by 10 depending on the diamond! The value of a 5-carat diamond will be estimated according to the following criteria:
- The type of diamond
- The characteristics of the diamond
- The diamond's analysis certificate
A set diamond will be more valuable than an investment diamond, just as an antique diamond will be more valuable than a recent one. We will then analyze the diamond's characteristics (described in the analysis certificates), particularly based on the 4 Cs:
- Carat (weight)
- Cut (shape): a “round brilliant” cut diamond will be more valuable than a “fancy” cut diamond (princess, emerald, oval, pear, cushion...)
- Color: colorless diamonds (D to F on the GIA scale) or nearly colorless (G to J) will be more valuable than diamonds tinted yellow (K to Z).
- Clarity: a diamond with no inclusions (FL) or inclusions only visible under 10x magnification (IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2) will be more valuable than a diamond with inclusions visible to the naked eye (P1 to P3).
Among the diamond's characteristics, fluorescence, symmetry, and polish will also be taken into account to estimate its value.
A 5-carat diamond must be accompanied by an authentication certificate to be bought or sold. The value of the diamond depends on the value of the certificate: the certificate from the GIA gemological laboratory is the most highly valued. Certificates from HRD, IGI, or LFG laboratories also hold value. On the other hand, an analysis certificate issued by a laboratory with a poor reputation, such as AIG, will have no value.
