The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) is one of the few gemological laboratories authorized to issue a certification to attest to the value of a diamond, along with HRD, IGI, and GIA. Discover the history and services of this laboratory.

EGL diamond certificate

What is EGL?

Founded in Antwerp in 1974, EGL is now established in the United States (New York and Los Angeles), South Africa (Johannesburg), Europe (Antwerp, Paris, London), Israel (Tel Aviv), India (Mumbai), Hong Kong, and South Korea (Seoul). All international laboratories are independent and operate under a franchise system. They specialize in the inspection and appraisal of jewelry, gemstones, and diamonds, according to criteria set by the parent company in Antwerp. EGL is approved by insurance companies.

EGL diamond appraisal

EGL offers individuals the appraisal of their jewelry, gemstones, pearls, and diamonds. The goal is to prevent individuals from selling their gem or diamond for less than its value. Appraisal may also be needed during an inheritance or estate division, to share assets fairly in terms of value.

EGL can appraise diamonds in its laboratory, as well as in a bank or at the individual's home upon request. Following the appraisal, the individual receives an appraisal certificate with a description of the diamond, its characteristics (measurements, weight), a photo, and its value.

EGL diamond certification

EGL also offers diamond certification. The certificate allows the individual to officially attest to the authenticity and value of their diamond in order to resell it more easily. Each certification issued by EGL includes information on weight (in carats), color, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry, and fluorescence of the diamond. A diagram is also provided with the diamond's characteristics.

It should be noted, however, that EGL certifications are less strict than those of other gemological laboratories that issue certifications, such as HRD, IGI, or GIA. Furthermore, diamonds certified by EGL are generally the least expensive.
