The gemological certificate, the diamond's identity card, first appeared in the 1970s with the creation of the first certificate by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The aim was to certify the diamond's authenticity and to assess its quality through the 4Cs (cut, weight, color and clarity). Since then, other internationally renowned gemmological laboratories have adopted this system to certify diamonds. Do you own a non-certified diamond, or are you planning to buy one and would like to have it certified? Find out how.

How to certify a diamond

Choosing a diamond certification body

Our customer service team is at your disposal free of charge to estimate the value of your jewel.

To certify your diamond, it is essential to contact an official organization. Otherwise, the certification obtained will be worthless. Only a few gemmological laboratories are authorized to issue certificates of authenticity. These are the following laboratories:

  • Laboratoire Français de Gemmologie (LFG): the world's oldest gemmological laboratory (founded in 1929). It is the only French laboratory offering gem and gemstone analysis, with nearly 5,000 analysis reports per year. You can choose to have your diamond certified by the LFG, as it has an exceptional gem library enabling it to provide quality reports.
  • GIA (Gemological Institute of America): this is the best-known laboratory for diamond certification. It has developed a certification scale (International Diamond Grading System) used by many laboratories, based on the study of the 4Cs.
  • IGI (International Gemological Institute): this is the world's largest independent laboratory, and the first to propose sealing certified diamonds to ensure their protection. The IGI analyzes diamonds on the same scale as the GIA.
  • The HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant): this Belgian gemmological laboratory analyzes diamonds while preserving the owner's anonymity thanks to a double code system.

Have your diamond certified by a gemmological laboratory

Once you've chosen the gemological laboratory where you'd like to have your diamond certified, contact them for more information. You can generally choose between two types of certification: full or partial. Partial certification is less expensive and can already give you an idea of the diamond's authenticity and value.

The certification process can take from 24 hours to several weeks, depending on the laboratory. The certification of your diamond will not only allow you to estimate its value and establish its authenticity, it will also set down on paper the main characteristics of your stone, studied by expert gemologists:

  • Stone shape and size
  • The cut quality (or proportions) of the diamond for the "round brilliant" cut
  • Diamond dimensions (diameter, height, thickness, minimum and maximum diameter in millimetres)
  • Diamond carat weight
  • The purity and color of the stone
  • A diagram showing inclusions if the diamond has any
  • Stone symmetry, polish and fluorescence

If the diamond has undergone color or purity treatment, the gemmological laboratory will indicate this when the diamond is analyzed.

Generally, the diamond is laser-marked on the rondiste with its certificate number, enabling it to be traced. This marking does not detract from the diamond's beauty, since it is only visible with a magnifying glass at x10 or x15 magnification.

Which diamonds can be certified?

Before embarking on the certification of your precious stone, ask yourself the right questions. Is certification of your diamond possible or necessary? It's important to know, for example, that you can't have a set diamond certified. We recommend that you do not certify very small diamonds or diamonds of lesser quality, as the cost of certification will be as high as the price of the stone!

On the other hand, if your diamond is of very high quality, it is strongly advised to have it certified. In the event of resale, its value will increase considerably if it is certified.

A gemological certificate is a kind of identity card for a diamond, first issued in the 1970s. It certifies a diamond's authenticity and assesses its quality through the 4Cs (cut, weight, color and clarity).

Recognized laboratories include Laboratoire Français de Gemmologie (LFG), Gemological Institute of America (GIA), International Gemological Institute (IGI) and Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD).

Once a laboratory has been selected, the certification process can last from 24 hours to several weeks. It includes analysis of the diamond's shape, size, dimensions, weight, purity, color, inclusions, symmetry, polish and fluorescence.

It is advisable to certify good quality diamonds, especially if they are of significant size. Set diamonds generally cannot be certified, and it is not advisable to certify very small diamonds or diamonds of lesser quality.
