How to Recognize Genuine Boucheron Jewelry: Signature, Serial Number, Hallmarks
The first jewelry house established on Place Vendôme, Boucheron creates heirloom pieces, from the Quatre ring to the Serpent Bohème. Here is what we examine, and what you can observe yourself. No single detail is conclusive on its own: only an in-person examination allows for a definitive assessment.
Where to Look
Inside the band of a ring, near the clasp of a bracelet or necklace, or on the back of a pendant or brooch. You should typically find: the Boucheron signature, a serial number, the metal fineness (750 for 18-karat gold, 950 for platinum), and the official hallmarks.
French Hallmarks
In France, the eagle's head denotes 18-karat gold and the dog's head signifies platinum; the lozenge-shaped master's mark identifies the workshop. Antique and vintage pieces feature hallmarks specific to their era: age is not a sign of counterfeit, it is simply read and interpreted.
Craftsmanship: The First Clue
On a Quatre ring, the four motifs—godron, Clou de Paris, grosgrain, and the diamond line—must be crisp and precise; on a Serpent Bohème, the gold beads well-defined and the serpent's head finely sculpted. Counterfeits often reveal themselves through soft contours and imprecise setting.
Warning Signs
- Irregular or excessively deep engraving, with misshapen lettering;
- Missing, blurry, or inconsistent hallmarks relative to the claimed metal purity;
- Crude finishing: visible solder marks, sharp edges, uneven stone settings;
- Abnormally light weight, or metal showing discoloration;
- An asking price disconnected from market reality.
Home Testing: Methods to Avoid
Acid, magnet, or scratch tests are inconclusive and risk causing irreversible damage to the piece.
Our Appraisal Process
At 43 rue Beaubourg, a state-certified gemologist examines your piece in your presence: magnifying inspection of engravings and hallmarks, verification of metal fineness, weight, and finishing, and stone grading. The appraisal is free and without obligation. Should you wish to sell, our house will extend a firm offer; if you have already received an offer from another establishment, our house commits to beating it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Authenticating Jewelry: Your Questions
Can you authenticate my Boucheron jewelry from photographs?+
Photographs allow us to determine whether the piece aligns with what our house is seeking, but cannot confirm authenticity, which requires an in-person examination under magnification.
Can I have my jewelry authenticated without selling it?+
Yes. The appraisal is free and without obligation: you leave with your piece and, if you wish, an offer that you are entirely free to decline.
Is an appointment necessary?+
No. We welcome you with or without an appointment, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm. For a guaranteed slot with no wait, call us at 01 48 87 81 44.
Can you answer my inquiry before I travel to your office?+
Yes: send us a photograph and the model name via WhatsApp, and we will let you know whether the piece matches what we are looking for. We never provide price estimates based on photos alone: authenticity, condition, and gemstones can only be assessed with the piece in hand.
