History of Maison Mellerio

The history of Maison Mellerio is above all the story of the Mellerio family. Originally from northern Italy, the Mellerios settled in Paris at the beginning of the 16^th century. On October 10, 1613, they were granted the right to trade precious objects in France tax-free by a royal decree from Marie de Médicis. Jean-Baptiste Mellerio began presenting his creations at the Château de Versailles, where Marie-Antoinette purchased a bracelet from him in 1780.

In 1815, the Mellerios opened their first boutique in Paris at 22 rue de la Paix. It was the first jewelry house to settle on this street, now a Parisian luxury artery. In 1830, King Louis Philippe I^st appointed Mellerio as the official supplier to the royal family (later, Mellerio also became the official supplier to the King of Italy and the Netherlands!). This was only the beginning of the Maison's success, which would exhibit its creations at several Paris Universal Exhibitions, including the 1867 one where it received a gold medal. 

At that time, Mellerio's parures were inspired by nature, with many colors and the use of enamel to make the parures even more beautiful. At the beginning of the 20^th century, Mellerio affirmed its Art Nouveau style with a series of jewelry on the theme of the peacock with exaggerated realism. In 1907, Mellerio ventured into the Art Deco style with its Egyptian necklace.

From the second half of the 20^th century onwards, Mellerio began collaborating with fashion houses (Balenciaga, Dior, Jean Patou...), but also in the world of sports, creating the Ballon d'Or trophy for France Football in 1955, and the Coupe des Mousquetaires and Roland Garros trophies for the French Tennis Federation in 1981.

Like many jewelers of its time, Mellerio continued to diversify, launching its first watch collection in 1993, which amazed with the ovoid shape of its dial (which would even be the subject of a patent). Mellerio filed many patents, including the one for the Mellerio Cut, a unique cut for diamonds and colored stones created in 2005.

The Mellerio style

The Mellerio style is first and foremost jewelry inspired by nature. Among the iconic motifs of Maison Mellerio, we find the wild rose, its emblem for over 150 years, notably featured in the Monte Rosa collection.

The Mellerio style is also the famous Mellerio Cut, which showcases the Maison's expertise. The stone is cut into an oval inscribed within an ellipse, featuring 57 facets (24 on the crown, 33 on the pavilion). This cut not only guarantees maximum brilliance but also allows one to recognize a Mellerio piece at a glance, as it is a unique cut!

With unique techniques, several of which are patented, and flawless mastery, Mellerio knows how to sublimate the material. But technique is not everything: Mellerio artisans also carefully select their stones for their quality and rarity.
