The history of the Maison Dior

The history of the Maison Dior is that of its creator. Christian Dior was born in 1905 in Granville in Lower Normandy and grew up in a privileged environment. At age 20, he entered Sciences Po with the intention of becoming a diplomat, but passionate about art and architecture, he eventually opened an art gallery.

Christian Dior quickly turned to the world of Haute Couture: he made a name for himself as a fashion illustrator for Le Figaro before becoming a modelist at Robert Piguet, then considered the greatest couturier in the world. He then became, with Pierre Balmain, an assistant to Lucien Lelong, before finally opening his own couture house in 1946, with a boutique at 30, Avenue Montaigne, in Paris.

Dior Joaillerie: the Haute Joaillerie branch of the Maison Dior

The Maison Dior later diversified, notably by launching in 1998 a line of luxury jewelry: Dior Joaillerie. Now headed by Victoire de Castellane, the Haute Joaillerie branch of the Maison Dior continually creates and reinvents itself to satisfy modern women. Dior jewelry is distinguished by its colors, high-quality materials, and intricate shapes. Among the recurring motifs is the rose, Christian Dior's favorite flower, which inspired his first Haute Couture collection in 1947: it appears, for example, on jewelry from the Précieuse Rose or Bois de Rose lines.

Both understated and luxurious, these pieces are primarily intended for those who wish to wear luxury accessories daily. The Mimioui ring, for example, a ring set with a precious stone and featuring a gold chain, is one of the iconic pieces of the Haute Joaillerie line of the Maison Dior.

Maison Dior's expertise in Haute Joaillerie

Behind Dior Joaillerie jewelry lies true expertise. Before any creation, Victoire de Castellane imagines the piece and provides a sketch to the designers, who will create a black-and-white drawing and a gouache drawing to best reproduce the subtleties of the future piece. Then, the drawings are entrusted to "one of the best Parisian workshops" according to the Maison's website.

The workshops where Dior jewelry is created are indeed selected for their know-how and technical skill: from the Dior studios' drawing and Victoire de Castellane's words, they can create a piece identical in every way to the one imagined by the director of Dior Joaillerie, from molding to assembly to setting. Jewelers from father to son, they possess all the necessary techniques and skills. The piece is then inspected by Maison Dior before being sold in stores.
