The History of the House of Harry Winston

Harry Winston, gemologist and businessman, founded his own jewelry house in 1932. From the outset, his jewelry stood out for its innovative design: Harry Winston founded his house on a revolutionary principle, now adopted by most jewelers, that the gem dictates the design, not the metal setting (a principle developed in the 1940s under the name Cluster technique).

To create his innovative jewelry, Harry Winston did not hesitate to acquire some of the world's most renowned gems, such as the Jonker diamond acquired in 1935 (a 726-carat rough diamond), the Vargas diamond acquired in 1938 (a Brazilian rough diamond of 726.60 carats), or the Hope Diamond acquired in 1948 (a famous 45.52-carat blue diamond that belonged to Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette). In 1952, according to Life Magazine, Harry Winston owned the second largest jewelry collection after the British Royal Family.

From the 1940s onward, Harry Winston became known as the "King of Diamonds" or the "Jeweler to the Stars": in 1944, Jennifer Jones, winner of the Best Actress Academy Award, wore a set signed by him; in 1948, Harry Winston met the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, to whom he sold several jewelry pieces.

In 2007, Harry Winston opened a watchmaking manufacture in Geneva. This decade was marked by new modern and refined collections such as the New York collection, paying homage to the city's glamour, the Lily Cluster collection, inspired by the lily flower, and the Water by Harry Winston collection, inspired by water.

Today, Harry Winston has salons in the world's greatest cities: New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
