History of Maison JAR

It is difficult to trace the path traveled by Maison JAR since its creation: this jewelry house cultivates the art of secrecy like no other. It has no websites and does not engage in any communication (no catalogues, no photos, no interviews, no muses, no window display in its office-boutique at 7 Place Vendôme…).

However, we know that Maison JAR was created in 1978 by Joël Arthur Rosenthal, born in 1943 in the Bronx, New York, and a graduate of philosophy and art history from Harvard. Joël Arthur Rosenthal quickly left the United States to settle in France, where he still lives today.

Upon his arrival in Paris, he first tried his hand at fashion and opened an embroidery boutique on Rue de l'Université. Back in New York, he spent a few months at the jeweler Bulgari before opening his own jewelry house in Paris.

Quickly, Maison JAR began to intrigue, and not only for its art of secrecy. At JAR, every jewel is unique because it is made to order: buying a JAR jewel gives a certain feeling of exclusivity, another ingredient of the house's success! JAR jewels are thus very rare, with only about sixty pieces created each year.

Most pieces are like paintings inspired by nature, with a predominance of the cabochon cut. JAR's preferred stones are coral, moonstone, or ruby, for their magnificent colors more than for their value. JAR jewels are not designed around the stones themselves but as works of art, combining gem colors like a painter.

Maison JAR only designs the jewels, which are then made by carefully selected subcontractors.

In 2002, an exhibition dedicated to JAR at Somerset House in London (and the only public exhibition to date) presented 400 pieces of the Maison, in the dark, to be admired with a flashlight. The exhibition catalogue, the only book ever devoted to Maison JAR to this day, was published in a limited number of copies: to acquire it today (second-hand), one must shell out several thousand euros.

We have an interest in all collections of JAR jewelry. You can get a free valuation or sell your JAR jewel via this form, by phone, by email ([email protected]), or by coming to our offices with or without an appointment at 43 Rue Beaubourg 75003 Paris).
