The auction house Coutau-Bégarie was founded by Me Olivier Coutau-Bégarie in 1992. After completing law studies, Olivier Coutau-Bégarie decided to settle in Paris in 1979 as an associate of a firm, before creating his own auction house on avenue de la Bourdonnais in Paris. Today, the Coutau-Bégarie auction house organizes about thirty sales per year. It specializes mainly in the following fields: jewelry, drawings, furniture, objets d'art, paintings, and Asian art. Its sales are distinguished by their event-like nature, with often original themes, such as the sale dedicated to Claude François in 2015 or the sale dedicated to French song in 2017.
Recent sales of the Coutau-Bégarie house
On December 5, 2019, the Coutau-Bégarie house offered during its Comic Strip and Illustration sale an unpublished drawing signed by Hergé, made on May 9, 1945 (the day after the armistice ending World War II) in Indian ink and watercolor to celebrate the Liberation: Jean Libert freed by Tintin and Hergé, his creations and his friends. The origin of this unpublished drawing is unusual since it was found on a page of the diary of the wife of Jean Libert, a friend of Hergé released on May 8.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, the Coutau-Bégarie house distinguished itself with an auction at Drouot of Haute Époque objects, some of which were very rare. This sale recorded a few records and notable sales:
- A lacquered painting by Pham HAU, sold for €231,840, a record for this artist;
- An enamel plate depicting Emperor Vitellius with a scepter on a blue horse by Jean LIMOSIN, sold for €113,344 to the Louvre Museum.
- An early work by Jean-Léon GÉRÔME depicting the ruins of the Doric temple of the goddess Hera, sold for €218,960
- The painting Washerwoman, Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, autumn effect by Francis PICABIA (1906), sold for €193,200.
