How to Recognize an Authentic Tiffany & Co. Jewelry Piece: Signature, Hallmarks, and Finish
Tiffany & Co. jewelry pieces are among the most counterfeited in the world. Here is what we look for, and what you can examine yourself. No single detail is sufficient on its own: only an in-person physical inspection allows for a definitive conclusion.
Where to Look
Inside the band of a ring or bangle, on the clasp, or on the plaque of a necklace or bracelet. You will typically see: Tiffany & Co. or T&CO., along with the metal fineness mark: 750 or AU750 for 18k gold, PT950 for platinum, 925 for silver.
Gold, Platinum, or Silver
A large portion of Tiffany jewelry in circulation is made of sterling silver. We specialize exclusively in gold and platinum: a silver piece, even authentic, does not fall within our scope. Checking the hallmark will save you an unnecessary trip.
Solitaires
On a Tiffany solitaire, the diamond is paramount. Some feature a laser-inscribed serial number on the girdle, visible under a loupe, matching their certificate. See our page on the Tiffany Setting solitaire.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Irregular or overly deep engraving, with poorly formed or misaligned lettering;
- Missing, blurry, or inconsistent hallmarks regarding the stated metal fineness;
- Crude finishing: visible solder marks, sharp edges, uneven gem setting;
- An abnormally light weight for the stated gold purity, or metal that discolors;
- An offer priced far below true market value.
Home Tests: To Be Avoided
Acid tests, magnet tests, or scratch tests prove nothing and can permanently damage the piece.
Documentation
The original box, invoice, and certificate are helpful, but they may have been separated from the piece: they can never replace a physical examination of the jewelry itself.
What We Do During the Valuation
At 43 rue Beaubourg, a state-certified gemologist examines the piece in your presence: inspection of engravings and hallmarks under a loupe, verification of metal purity, weight, and finish, as well as examination of the gemstones. The appraisal is free and carries no obligation. Should you wish to sell, our house will extend a firm purchase offer; if you have already received a competing offer, our house commits to beating it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Authenticating jewelry: your questions
My Tiffany piece is marked 925: are you interested in buying it?+
No: 925 indicates sterling silver, and we specialize in gold and platinum. A piece marked 750, AU750, or PT950 is of interest to us, depending on the model and its condition.
Can you authenticate my Tiffany jewelry from photos?+
Photos allow us to determine whether the piece matches what we buy, but cannot definitively prove authenticity, which must be assessed in person under a loupe. Send us photos of the inside of the ring or clasp, or visit our office.
Can I have my jewelry authenticated without selling it?+
Yes. The valuation is free and carries no obligation: you leave with your jewelry and, if you wish, an offer that you are completely free to decline.
My Tiffany piece has neither its original box nor its invoice: can it still be authentic?+
Yes. Many heirloom pieces no longer have their documentation. Authenticity is determined by the piece itself, not the box.
Do I need to make an appointment?+
No. We welcome you with or without an appointment, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm. For a guaranteed time slot without waiting, please call us at 01 48 87 81 44.
Can you provide an initial assessment before I visit?+
Yes: send us a photo and the model name via WhatsApp, and we will let you know if the piece matches what we purchase. We never provide price estimates based on photos alone: authenticity, condition, and gemstones can only be properly assessed in person.
