A Parisian jeweler founded in 1780, Chaumet creates pieces often handed down through generations. Here is what we look for, and what you can observe yourself. No single detail is conclusive on its own: only an in-person examination allows for a definitive assessment.

Where to look

On the inside of a ring’s band, near the clasp of a bracelet or necklace, or on the reverse of a pendant or brooch. You should typically find: the Chaumet signature (frequently Chaumet Paris), a serial number, the metal fineness mark (750 for 18k gold, 950 for platinum), and the legal hallmarks.

French hallmarks

In France, the eagle's head certifies 18k gold and the dog's head platinum; the diamond-shaped master hallmark identifies the maker's workshop. Antique pieces from the Maison bear the specific marks of their era: age is not a sign of suspicion, it simply tells its own story.

The finish, the primary clue

On a Liens jewel, the cross motif must be crisp and symmetrical; on a Joséphine, the tiara shape balanced and the prongs delicate; on a Bee My Love, the honeycomb facets perfectly defined. Counterfeits often reveal themselves through soft outlines and imprecise stone setting.

Warning signs to watch for

  • uneven or overly deep engraving, with poorly formed or misaligned lettering;
  • missing, blurry hallmarks or markings inconsistent with the stated metal fineness;
  • crude finishing: visible solder marks, sharp edges, rough stone setting;
  • an abnormally light weight for the stated gold purity, or metal that discolors;
  • an asking price completely disconnected from market reality.

At-home tests: to be avoided

Acid, magnet, or scratch tests prove nothing and risk irreversibly damaging the piece.

Documentation

The original box, invoice, and certificate are useful, but they may have been separated from the jewel over time: they can never substitute for a physical examination of the piece.

Our appraisal process

At 43 rue Beaubourg, a state-certified gemologist examines your piece in your presence: reading engravings and hallmarks under a loupe, verifying metal fineness, checking weight and craftsmanship, and assessing gemstones. The valuation is free and carries no obligation. If you wish to sell, the Maison will make you a firm purchase offer; if you have already received an offer from a colleague, the Maison commits to offering you better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Authenticating a jewel: your questions

Can you authenticate my Chaumet jewel from photographs?+

Photographs allow us to tell you if the piece matches what we are looking for, but cannot establish authenticity: this can only be judged in person, under a loupe. Send us photos of the inner engravings and reverse side, or visit our office.

Can I have my jewel authenticated without selling it?+

Yes. Our appraisal is free and carries no obligation: you leave with your piece and, if you wish, an offer that you remain entirely free to decline.

My Chaumet jewel has neither box nor invoice: can it still be authentic?+

Yes. Many heirloom pieces have lost their original paperwork. Authenticity is determined by the piece itself, not the presentation box.

Do I need to make an appointment?+

No. We welcome you with or without an appointment, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm. For a guaranteed time slot without waiting, please call us at 01 48 87 81 44.

Can you give me an initial answer before I travel to your office?+

Yes: send us a photograph and the model name on WhatsApp, and we will let you know if the piece corresponds to what we seek. We never provide price quotes based on photos alone: authenticity, condition, and gemstones can only be assessed with the jewel in hand.
