The French Gemmology Laboratory (LFG)
There are many gemmological laboratories in the world, including the American GIA, the Belgian HRD, and the international IGI. In France, there are two recognized gemmological laboratories: the French Gemmological Laboratory (LFG) and the Carat Gem Lab (CGL).
The French Gemmological Laboratory is the leading gemmological laboratory in France. It is the oldest active laboratory in the world. Founded in 1929 by the Diamond Syndical Chamber, it has been affiliated since 2011 with the Union BJOP (the French Union of Jewelry, Jewellery, Goldsmithing, Stones and Pearls).
The LFG offers analysis of gemstones, diamonds, pearls and colored stones. ISO 9001 certified and endowed with the ethical, social and environmental certification of the RJC (Responsible Jewellery Council), it is renowned for the quality of its analyses. It is the only laboratory in France offering scientifically based analyses. During the stone analysis process, many experts intervene to guarantee the objectivity and reliability of the analysis report. The analysis of gemstones leads to the establishment of a worldwide recognized authenticity report, as well as an identification report. The LFG actually issues more than 5,000 analysis reports per year!
It should also be noted that as the oldest gemmological laboratory in the world, the LFG has an impressive gem library that further enhances the reliability of its analyses, as well as state-of-the-art equipment and techniques.

The Carat Gem Lab is an independent laboratory founded in 2009 by Dr. Eric Erel, who worked at the EGL gemmological laboratory in Vancouver and at the Gubelin laboratory in Lucerne, Switzerland. Like the LFG, the CGL offers expertise on diamonds and gemstones, whether natural or synthetic. At the end of each analysis, a report is issued that can be useful to the gemstone owner for insurance or resale of their stone. The analysis reports issued by the CGL are renowned for their precision, detail, and clarity.
The Carat Gem Lab also conducts research activities to stay at the forefront of innovations in gemmological expertise. It collaborates with international research groups and publishes its research results in specialized journals available in Europe as well as in the United States and Asia. It also offers gemmological training to jewelers and their employees.
