What is Gem-A?

Gem-A (Gemmological Association of Great Britain) is a gemmology training and qualification body based in the United Kingdom. This organization was established to educate about precious stones and diamonds, particularly in the context of the proliferation of synthetic stones and cultured pearls.

The History of Gem-A

In 1908, a gemmology committee was created by the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG) to represent the interests of jewellers in the context of the Industrial Revolution. The goal was also to establish recognized gemmological qualifications for the trade of precious stones and jewellery in the United Kingdom. Courses in the study of precious stones and exams were quickly set up.

In 1931, the committee became the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, a separate branch of NAG. In the following years, Gem-A forged numerous ties with other gemmological associations, notably in the United States, Asia, and Australia. Its autonomy and independence allowed it to become an independent organization in the 1990s.

Today, Gem-A is a British educational charity; it offers gemmology and diamond courses in 25 countries worldwide!

Gem-A offers gemmology and diamond courses, as well as a wide range of short courses, laboratory courses, and one-day workshops, aimed at both beginners and experts in the field.

Gem-A publishes the magazine Gems and Jewellery seven times a year, covering all aspects of precious stones and jewellery, as well as the quarterly magazine The Journal of Gemmology, in collaboration with the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF.

Gem-A Courses

Gem-A offers basic gemmology courses leading to certification, as well as FGA diploma-level gemmology courses. More specialized diamond courses also allow students to obtain a diamond diploma and possible membership in the DGA. All courses can be taken at the association's headquarters in London, during the day or in the evening, or at one of Gem-A's international accredited teaching centres. Online courses are also available.
